Abalone Harvest at Fujian Offshore Ranch and the Story Behind It

Abalone, historically known as fù, fù fish, sea ear, also called mirror fish, nine-hole snail, and bright-eye fish, is a collective term for species under the genus Haliotis in the family Haliotidae of the primitive order Vetigastropoda within the phylum Mollusca. Except for the Atlantic coast of South America, the Caribbean Sea, and the east coast of the United States, abalone are distributed in coastal waters nearshore on all continents. The vast majority of wild abalone are found in the cold waters off New Zealand, South Africa, Australia, the western coast of North America, and Japan. They inhabit rocky shores, feed on algae, and have existed on Earth for nearly 400 million years, making them a living fossil.
